WANTED: YOUR IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS I recently received an e-mail at the I-CAR Volunteer and Instructor Support Centre from Volunteer Joe Burda. Joe is a property claim trainer with State Farm Insurance and is part of the I-CAR family, serving as the Idaho State Chairperson. The e-mail began, "Tom, you recently reminded me that if any ideas cropped up, I should send you a message I am passionate about the fact that all the successes in the field start with the work our volunteer committees do. I can cite organization after organization whose successes are based on the strength of their volunteer committees." Joe then went on to suggest five things that I-CAR could consider to improve its efforts to train the collision industry. The ideas ranged from using other organizations to promote I-CAR class schedules, to ways to make our regional conferences better. We are now working with Joe to make his suggestions become realities. Joes last suggestion was, "I bet that if we could get some of us to sit down and conduct a brainstorming session, it would amaze us how many great ideas are out there." We at the Support Centre agree wholeheartedly with Joe and we encourage all I-CAR committees to spend a portion of their meeting time doing what Joe suggests. In addition to any ideas coming from your committee, we would like to solicit any ideas that you may have individually to help I-CAR train the industry. Your feedback is vital to I-CARs success. If you have any ideas or suggestions for I-CAR on how we can accomplish our mission of training the industry to achieve safe and complete repairs, please feel free to e-mail me at tom.mack@i-car.com. |

UPDATE: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS 2001
The PSAs are off to a great start! They are already outperforming PSAs from previous years. Since they were released, they have been heard on 143 stations across the country, for a total of 22,290 reported airings and over 60 million audience impressions. So far, the top three markets for the PSAs are New York, Ohio and Texas. You can listen to the PSAs by downloading them from the I-CAR web site. I-CAR has used a variety of creative themes to portray the importance of the Gold Class Professionals program. "The Dating Show" theme portrays Goldie, a vehicle used to advertise the Gold Class program, as a dating show contestant who must choose the best vehicle repair shop. The "Emergency Room" announcement presents Goldie as a patient who gets properly repaired after being involved in an accident. I-CAR committees, volunteers, and Gold Class businesses are also encouraged to use the PSAs in their local marketing programs. If you would like a listing of the radio stations that have aired the PSAs, or if you have any additional questions, please contact Marketing Specialist Jennifer Wilkens at 800-ICAR-USA, X243. |

SOMETHING NEW FOR INSTRUCTORS! CLASS TIME ESTIMATES To help our instructors better prepare for their classes, the I-CAR Tech Centre has created a listing of estimated class times for instructing each topic within a programs module. Structural Parts Steel Programs 1 and 2 are the first programs to include these class time estimates. An Excel spreadsheet with the estimates is available in the Instructor Support area of the web site. The times listed are to be used as a guide for instructing the programs and will vary based on the experience of the instructor and the participation of the class. The estimated times were developed based on pilot classes and are updated to reflect any revisions made following the pilot classes. Instructors are encouraged to keep track of their actual times to instruct each topic and provide their feedback so that the listing includes the most accurate times. |

NORTHWEST REGION RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING TRAINING SITE OF THE MONTH Field Manager Bob Mickey recently acknowledged Advance Tech Collision of Santa Rosa, California as the Outstanding Training Site of the Month for the Northwest Region. This business has been home to many I-CAR training classes for the last four years. The owner, Kari Solem, closes the business at 4:00pm before each class session to set up for the local students. The staff stores chairs and tables on premises for these occasions and provides beverages and snacks to attendees. The average class size runs in the 30s; however, the most popular classes have been attended by as many as 72 students. Kari Solem, who has been the main class administrator for the site, is one of the original founders of local committee CA0954. She and her staff are to be commended for their assistance and dedication to the success of I-CAR in the Santa Rosa, California area. Thanks to Kari and dedicated volunteers like her, the Santa Rosa District received the Superior Performance Award for the Northwest Region for surpassing its attendance goals and offering all training courses available. |

AWARD WINNER PROFILES: NORTHWEST REGION Everyone knows that all the volunteers and instructors who work with I-CAR are winners. However, each year we choose one very special volunteer from each region to receive the Founders Award and one exemplary instructor from each region as Instructor of the Year. This year, the Northwest Region honored Clyde "Cud" Everly of Central Foreign Parts in Denver, Colorado with its Founders Award. Cud has been volunteering and working with I-CAR for over 20 years. He is an active instructor, Colorado State Lead Instructor, and currently serves as the Mile High (Denver area) District Chairman. Field Manager Bob Mickey was pleased to recognize Everlys outstanding efforts and endurance. The Northwest Region Instructor of the Year is Marc Essig of Beaver Creek, Oregon. Marc has been active with I-CAR for nearly 10 years. He currently serves as Oregon State Lead Instructor. Marc teaches both traditional and Enhanced Delivery programs. He is also very active in administration of the Steel Welding Qualification Test and will be instructing at the first Aluminum Welding Qualification Test site in the United States. Marc has been very active in course development and is a regular contributor to numerous trade journals. He has certainly gone the extra mile for I-CAR and the entire repair industry. Congratulations, Cud Everly and Marc Essig! I-CAR could not exist without the efforts of dedicated supporters like these two. |
