I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION RECOGNIZES 2002 CRIN INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR

fig 1. PhotoThe Collision Repair Instructors Network (CRIN) and the I-CAR Education Foundation are proud to announce the 2002 Instructor of the Year! The Honoree is Greg Brink, a collision repair instructor from Lake County Technical High School in Grayslake, Illinois.

Brink attended the DAVEA Career Center in Addison, Illinois and after high school he began working as a helper at a collision repair business. After a few years, he decided to become an instructor to help give back to the industry that helped him. "I think I can do more to help this industry by being an instructor, and not a working technician," said Brink.

Brink is the second instructor from Lake County Technical High School to win this award. In 1996, Jeffrey Brierton, was Brink's co-teacher at the time. Brierton is now the Assistant Director for Personnel at the school.

CRIN is sponsored by the I-CAR Education Foundation and is designed to facilitate the exchange of technical and professional information among collision repair instructors, school administrators, and industry partners. "CRIN has helped me meet other instructors from around the country and I enjoy talking to them, sharing ideas, and knowing that I can get help from any of them," said Brink.

The selection of Brink for this award was made from a list of several other quality candidates. The final selection was made by the Executive Committee of the Education Foundation's Board of Trustees. The Executive Committee consists of:

Chairman Don Askew, PPG Industries, Inc.
Vice Chair Brian Whitcomb, General Motors Corporation
Secretary Frank Hall, State Farm Insurance
Treasurer Bruce Cooley, Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp.
Committee Chair Terri McMenamin, ABRN
Committee Chair Clark Plucinski, True2Form Collision Repair Centers

In addition to serving as a collision repair instructor for a program that is ASE certified to the NATEF standards, Brink is a very active I-CAR instructor in the South Central Region.

"It has been a pleasure to serve on Greg's advisory committee at Lake County for the past three years. This experience keeps me closely aware of the challenges instructors like Greg face at the secondary level," said Ron Ray, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation.

ABRN Editor in Chief Russell Thrall III (left) presents I-CAR Education Foundation Board Trustee Freda Thompson with the ABRN Industry Leadership Award.

This award is given annually to an individual who goes above and beyond to excel in the collision industry. According to Terri McMenamin, Publisher of ABRN, "Freda has worked hard the past year to improve the image of the industry, recruit apprenticeships, and implement mentoring programs. What really made our decision easier was her involvement and commitment to the PACE+ST3 program offered by the I-CAR Education Foundation."

When the Education Foundation announced the PACE+ST3 training initiative at NACE last year, Freda Thompson, a Foundation Board Trustee, expressed a strong interest in piloting the program in a high school near her shop. Kim Beck, the collision repair-training instructor at A.P. Brewer High School in Somerville, Alabama, also teaches I-CAR classes. Freda and her husband Myron were already members of Beck's advisory committee. Freda not only helped guide the PACE+ST3 pilot, but also employed one of the PACE+ST3 students as an intern this summer. She also worked with the Alabama Collision Repairer's Association (ACRA) to carry the message to collision repair business owners all over the state.

Freda, also Vice-President of ACRA, invited Ron Ray to present at two ACRA meetings this year. Freda, her husband Myron, and other members of the high school's advisory committee also participated in a panel discussion at one of the ACRA meetings to share with the present shop owners how to successfully operate a committee. "Freda has worked hard during the pilot of PACE+ST3 at Brewer High School, and also to spread the word about the program throughout Alabama to her fellow collision repair business owners," stated Ron Ray, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation.

I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDS MBNA CREDIT CARD SCHOLARSHIP

The I-CAR Education Foundation has awarded a scholarship funded by proceeds earned from its MBNA affinity credit card program. Gregory Valazquez, a student at Blue Hills Regional Technical Center in Canton, Massachusetts, will receive $1,000 to continue his education in auto collision repair.

fig 1. PhotoValazquez is a participant of the People Actively Creating Employability thru Short Term Task Training (PACE+ST3) Program that is offered at the school. In his spare time, Valazquez enjoys customizing cars for himself and friends. He is also adept at doing aftermarket body designs, spoilers, customizing engines and installing stereo systems.

Valazquez was selected from a pool of 21 candidates that had participated in the three pilot programs for the I-CAR Education Foundation's PACE+ST3 training initiative in the 2001-2002 school term. The other two schools were A.P. Brewer High School in Somerville, Alabama, instructor Kim Beck, and Walker Career Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, instructor Greg Gambrel. PACE+ST3 focuses on the students learning tasks that employers have identified as important for an entry-level employee.

The final selection of Valazquez was made by the Executive Committee of the Education Foundation's Board of Trustees. The Executive Committee consists of:

Greg is also our lead student in the PACE+ST3 Program, having participated in this initiative since January of 2002," said Robert Porazzo, Instructor, Auto Body Department at Blue Hills Regional Technical School.

The PACE+ST3 initiative gave Valazquez an opportunity to be employed at Acme Body & Paint, a local shop during the summer months. "If given the opportunity to foster his talent and continue his education, I believe that Greg would be an asset to any company," said Chad Sulkala of Acme Body & Paint Co., Inc., in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

The I-CAR Education Foundation, founded in 1991, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of entry-level employees for the collision industry. "We are providing young adults with an opportunity to continue their education and further develop their career interests in auto collision repair, which is a big part of our mission," said Ron Ray, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation.
