The event will be held Friday, May 21 through Sunday, May 23 at the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. Over 200 exhibitors will display and demonstrate equipment in the Centrum's main hall. It is anticipated that more than 4,000 automotive repair industry professionals will visit the show during its three-day run.

The I-CAR training program Fundamentals Of Collision Repair (FCR01) will be offered to event attendees on Saturday, May 22 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In addition to the floor exhibits, a full slate of educational and training seminars are scheduled. Among speakers scheduled to present are Tony Passwater of AEII, John Shortell of BodyShop Solutions, and Dennis Kiyohara of Mitchell International. INSTRUCTORS VOICE WHY THEY CONTINUE TO HELP TRAIN THE INDUSTRY

National Teacher Appreciation Week occurred last week (May 2-8) and in continued honor of the I-CAR, CRIN, and career and technical schools and college instructors that are helping to train the collision industry, several have explained why they feel it is important to instruct the future of the industry.

CRIN Instructor Bob Porazzo

"We need to give back to today's youth. The trade is losing too many numbers. With this large loss we need to do what we can to fill the trade with qualified technicians. After I started as a substitute instructor, I enjoyed it so much that I became a full-time instructor. Now I run a well-rounded program where the students are one big family. If you provide the students with that type of atmosphere and the chance to work hard, they will want to excel. Through presenting new ways of learning and make teaching fun, the students go out into the industry well-trained."

I-CAR Instructor Ken Friesen

"I feel it is important to be a collision repair instructor to help ensure vehicles are repaired properly both for safety issues as well as appearance. The vehicle should look like and be of the same structural integrity as it was in pre-accident condition. Today's vehicles are becoming more complex and costly each year, so there is a greater investment to protect with each new vehicle.

What drives me to continue to instruct is right from the I-CAR Mission statement: 'The I-CAR Mission is to research, develop, and deliver quality technical educational programs on collision repair, thereby raising the level of available knowledge and improving communication within the collision repair, insurance and related industries, for the ultimate benefit of the consumer.' This allows me to give something back to the trade, which I feel has been and still is a very fulfilling career choice."

CRIN Instructor Laura Angell

"It is important to me to be an instructor because it is so rewarding to see the success of the students in industry. Several times a year a prior student will call or drop by and tell us how well they are doing. They want to share some of the challenges they have accomplished or share in the news of a promotion, etc.  There is something very noble about being a teacher, and being able to give back to the industry. This industry has been very good to me, and being able to help secure the future success of the industry by providing trained entry-level employees is a very great feeling."

I-CAR Instructor Larry Hults

"As an I-CAR instructor my personal and professional credentials have more value and my reputation in the collision repair community is enhanced with this designation.

The work that we do is very important to the industry. Do you remember why I-CAR was created? We intended to get all parties interested in the repair into one room and give them all one clear message about the ‘right way to repair the car.' Without the instructors this would not happen.

As an I-CAR instructor I get a chance to help make a difference! I chose to become an instructor because a man I respected and looked up to, as a leader in the industry, was kind enough to ask me [to become an instructor]. He then took the time to support me in the early years and is still a good friend and an active I-CAR instructor. This man's name is Jim Swanson, and he made me want to join, while setting a great example.

What drives me to continue to instruct: when the class is over and half the students are still there at 10:30 p.m. talking about the subject you just covered and wanting more details and to share with the others their knowledge and experiences; when a student calls the next day and tells you how much they learned and that they are applying their new knowledge at work; when I show up at a meeting or a collision repair facility or another insurance company and the employees recognize me and want to talk about I-CAR; and when every once and awhile at the end of a class the students give you a standing ovation. Those are perfect examples of a successful I-CAR class!

What continues to drive me is the students, the recognition, and the knowledge I get every day from the unselfish sharing that goes on in the collision industry."

CRIN Instructor George Kerner

Collison Repair Instructors Network"I attended a technical school and the teacher was tough, but he gave me the skills to enter a trade that challenges me daily. The collision industry has been good to me; I'm just returning what someone else took the time to give me."

I-CAR Instructor John Shewbridge

"I feel it is important to be an instructor because cars and technology are changing and we have to keep up. Our obligation is to properly repair collision damaged vehicles. The technicians need information in order to perform these repairs. What I like most as an instructor is to teach everybody in this industry how to fish for this information. It is always rewarding to see technicians ‘light up' when they find out this information is available and I feel a huge sense of accomplishment in helping them with these issues.

I have been involved in the collision industry since the mid 70's. I have had a wonderful career and have been blessed with the experience of being around a wide variety of people with different backgrounds. Having this valuable information given to me has molded me and changed my approach to restoring collision-damaged vehicles. In the beginning, I struggled without this vital information. I feel it is very important to share the knowledge that has been shared with me so that others will not have to struggle as I did. I enjoy my career with continuing education and the collision industry. I also enjoy sharing this with my wife, who is also an instructor, and family that supports me in this endeavor.

Instructing class participants the correct way to repair a vehilce and how to restore it properly in order to saves lives is what drives me to instruct. I know that just changing one person's view on a kinked rail or how to section in a structural panel may save the person in that vehicle if it is involved in another collision.

Plain and simple - we save lives!"

Students listen in as I-CAR Instructor Steve Hudey instructs the class.

I-CAR Canadian Instructor Steve Hudey of Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) found himself teaching a full house on Saturday, April 3, 2004 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Steve's Saturday class included Cosmetic Straightening Aluminum (STA01) and Replacing Aluminum Exterior Panels (PRA01) and taught a total of 62 student units, the most student units taught in one day for Canada this year.

Steve said, "The class reception for the two aluminum programs in Saskatoon was excellent. It was great to see the students wanting to learn the characteristics of aluminum, techniques involving the repair, and replacement issues with aluminum parts on today's vehicles. It was good to spend the day with these students, because they wanted to be there."

Congrats to Steve on the student attendance and helping train so many knowledge hungry students!
