I-CAR now offers collision industry professionals access to their training records 24/7 through the myI-CAR function on the I-CAR web site. Through myI-CAR, you can view training history, print a current transcript, and view/change personal contact information on file with I-CAR.

"Members of the collision industry want and need to know their training status as soon as possible," explained I-CAR Director of Business Development and North American Operations Rick Tuuri. "I-CAR has made great strides in reducing the amount of time between taking the class and informing the student of their status. Offering online transcripts is one of the greatest strides that we have made in this area to date. We will continue to offer more improvements, so keep your eye on myI-CAR."

The myI-CAR function is open to all collision industry professionals that have completed any I-CAR training. To view your training records online, visit the I-CAR web site at www.i-car.com and click on the "myI-CAR" logo. Once there, create a free account by verifying your information. Effective July 1, 2006, anyone requesting a transcript or certificate reprint directly from I-CAR will pay a $35 US/$40 CDN fee per reprint requested. I-CAR encourages everyone to avoid this fee by logging into the myI-CAR section of the web site for self-print transcripts.

1,000TH I-CAR ONLINE TRAINING PROGRAM PURCHASED & NEW "STEEL ALLOYED WITH BORON" ONLINE PROGRAM INTRODUCED

I-CAR ONLINE TRAINING...COLLISION INDUSTRY TRAINING, 24/7Less than a year from its launch, collision industry professionals have learned proper collision repair procedures through over 1,000 I-CAR Online Training program units taken by the industry.

"The collision industry demanded more accessible training, and I-CAR delivered. Online Training is available to anyone, anywhere, 24/7. This training delivery is self-paced, so students can review procedures as frequently as necessary. Online Training offers one more way that I-CAR can provide everyone in the collision industry with the necessary technical knowledge and skills relevant to their position to achieve a complete and safe repair," commented Tom McGee, I-CAR President & CEO, "That is the Vision of I-CAR."

"This is an achievement that I-CAR is truly proud of," said I-CAR Director of Business Development and North American Operations Rick Tuuri. "I-CAR listened to the industry and developed an online curriculum that covers vehicle and procedure-specific information, as well as general collision repair concepts. This milestone tells us that the industry just cast their 1,000th vote that we are doing the right thing. I-CAR focuses many efforts towards better understanding its customers, and we hear the industry’s support for Online Training loud and clear. We will continue to listen to the industry as we expand our offerings to meet the training needs of all collision industry professionals."

I-CAR Online Training takes guesswork out of working with steel alloyed with boron

The newest I-CAR Online Training program details a repair procedure on a technologically advanced material - ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) alloyed with boron. This frequently misunderstood material is the cause of many challenging repairs when technicians have not been properly trained on how to work with the extremely high strength material. Replacing UHSS Panels Alloyed with Boron on the Volvo XC90 offers a unique training opportunity for industry professionals to familiarize themselves with handling this material.

I-CAR Online Training

"Even if you’re not specifically working on a Volvo XC90, this program will benefit you," explained I-CAR Director of Business Development and North American Operations Rick Tuuri. "I-CAR researches and performs many complicated leading-edge repairs to better inform the industry of how to deal with such challenges. For instance, many in the industry do not realize that ultra-high-strength steel alloyed with boron can be welded or drilled with the proper tools. The Replacing UHSS Panels Alloyed with Boron on the Volvo XC90 Online Training program helps to take the guesswork out of these repairs. Online Training is another example of how I-CAR uses technology to meet the changing needs of the industry."

In the Replacing UHSS Panels Alloyed with Boron on the Volvo XC90 Online Training program, participants will learn about UHSS alloyed with boron and the specific challenges of repairing this particular type of material. In addition, this program shows how to section the upper rear body panel, and the inner and outer lower rear body panels. Similar to other vehicle-specific Online Training programs, this program covers multiple model years. Refer to your estimating guide to determine which model years are covered by this procedure.

Topics covered in this Online Training program include:

  • A description of UHSS alloyed with boron.
  • Straightening recommendations for UHSS alloyed with boron.
  • Cutting and drilling recommendations.
  • Upper rear body panel replacement and sectioning guidelines.
  • Inner and outer lower rear body panel replacement and sectioning guidelines.
  • Reapplying corrosion protection following repairs.

I-CAR Online Training became accessible to the industry as of August 2005 and is self-study training, available 24/7. Perfect for training over your lunch break, Online Training programs are all 30-60 minutes in length. These online programs are unique and contain content not found in I-CAR Live training. Upon successful completion of an Online Training program, the student will earn 0.25 (one-quarter) of a point, which can be applied to the Gold Class Professionals™ or Platinum Individual™ recognition programs. Students will also earn a self-print certificate for each program successfully completed, and I-CAR will store the purchased program in a personal library indefinitely.

Visit www.i-caronlinetraining.com for more information, or to participate in a complimentary demo program to see if Online Training is right for you.

I-CAR PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR TRAVELS TO NEW ZEALAND TO TRAIN OTHERS

Larry Hults, 18-year I-CAR Program Instructor

Larry Hults, 18-year I-CAR Program Instructor

I-CAR program instructor Larry Hults taught an extensive number of I-CAR classes in New Zealand from March 30 - May 9, 2006. On an annual basis, an I-CAR program instructor has traveled to New Zealand and other international locations to teach a series of I-CAR classes.

During this trip Hults traveled to nine different locations from the North Island to the South Island: starting with a two-day instructor seminar in Auckland, classes in Napier, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Wellington (New Zealand’s capital), Christchurch, Queenstown, Invercargill, and Dunedin. The classes were largely attended by: repair technicians; apprentices; insurance estimators, adjustors and appraisers; facility owners; and managers.

While Hults has taught I-CAR classes for 18 years, he worked for Allstate Insurance for 36, most recently as a National & Regional Claims Manager until he retired two years ago. He admits that since retirement he has had time to travel abroad and do more extensive work for I-CAR.

"We all have the same goal," said Hults. "Everyone, not just industry professionals in the United States, would like the means to achieve a complete and safe repair and identify what needs to be done for a proper repair. With I-CAR top-notch technical training, we help everyone from collision to insurance professionals achieve that goal in the U.S. and all over the world."

In addition to his dedication as a program instructor, Hults has also served on the Gold Class Advisory Committee since 2003.

Hults taught a number of I-CAR classes in New Zealand including but not limited to:

FEMALE COLLISION REPAIR STUDENT EXCELS IN COMPETITION, CLASSROOM, AND WORKPLACE

Tiffany Wetherell, SkillsUSA State First Place Winner

Tiffany Wetherell, SkillsUSA State First Place Winner

Tiffany Wetherell, a student at Warren Tech in Lakewood, Colorado, took home a first place win in the state SkillsUSA competition in Colorado Springs, Colorado at Pikes Peak Community College on April 28. She was the only woman to compete at this event and took first in the secondary division in collision repair. Just last year she finished third.

Wetherell has a reason to celebrate this accomplishment and many others now that she has found a path she excels in. "I started on the path to the auto collision industry when I was 16 years old, with no experience and not a lot of direction. I never liked conventional school and although I had good grades, I couldn't cope with high school. Once I dropped out of school, I started at Warren Tech and actually see a bright future for myself," said Wetherell.

Wetherell has been a student at Warren Tech for three years and returned for an extra year to complete the ASE/NATEF Structural program and learn more about shop management. She has already completed the ASE/NATEF Non-Structural program. She completed her GED at Warren Tech and was chosen by her peers to serve as President of the school’s SkillsUSA Club. The auto collision program at Warren Tech is run like a typical collision repair facility. Wetherell worked as a student general manager this semester; doing customer service, taking care of equipment, ordering parts, writing estimates, etc. Due to all of her hard work, her peers voted her "quality worker" of the session on more than one occasion. Plus, she’s completed the work for 24 I-CAR classes and is scheduled to take the Automotive Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Qualification Test this month.

Wetherell participating in SkillsUSA competition.

"Her hard work and dedication makes her a role model to other students," said Warren Tech and I-CAR program instructor Laura Angell. "She does a lot of work at home and on her own time so that she can devote all of her time in the classroom to live coursework. She is a great example of someone who gives 110% and wants to grow and excel in the collision industry."

Not only is she a student she also works. For the past two years, Tiffany has worked at Bear Creek Auto Body also in Lakewood Colorado, handling parts for the shop through ordering, invoicing, and returns. Recently, she was promoted to Collision Repair Assistant, working on the facility floor doing the type of work she loves.

Looking down the road, Wetherell sees a natural progression in her career from a line technician to production manager to her ultimate goal to become a repair facility owner.

"Since joining the collision industry, I have accomplished many hurdles and have become successful in this field like I never would have expected," said Wetherell. "My future is now an open door thanks to the teachers and I-CAR and I-CAR Education Foundation staff that support the Warren Tech Auto Collision program. My family and friends have also been behind me the whole way."

Wetherell will go on to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition for collision repair in Kansas City, Missouri on June 19.
