EDELEN RECAPS I-CAR FISCAL YEAR SUCCESSES AND FUTURE VISION DURING ANNUAL MEETING CEO ADDRESS

I-CAR President and CEO John Edelen
I-CAR President and CEO John Edelen addresses the audience during the Luncheon & CEO Address on Friday, July 26.

I-CAR President and CEO John Edelen highlighted the successes of the company’s past fiscal year and provided insight into the future during the company’s International Annual Meeting held in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The past fiscal year, Fiscal ’08, was described by Edelen as, “A Year of Change and a Year of Progress.”

Edelen pointed to the major fiscal year accomplishments being:

  • Improving our engagement with the marketplace – Among our accomplishments in Fiscal ’08, I-CAR must recognize the work of our committees, volunteers and program instructors – supported by Field Operations and Marketing – in achieving the levels of training activity in the local marketplace that are in keeping with the training needs of the industry and the role of I-CAR to meet them. The level of improvement over Fiscal ’07 is truly noteworthy.
  • Obtaining the voice of the customer – By utilizing the Industry Segment Advisory Councils, the Market Segment Teams, industry surveys, and other means, I-CAR is gaining direct input from the industry on how the training organization can better serve the industry and provide the training needed to repair today’s vehicles.
  • Building upon a strong foundation of volunteers and program instructors through improved support – Edelen commented at length about the contributions of what he termed, “I-CAR ‘s Frontlines.”

“For me, the local market network of committees, volunteers and program instructors is at the heart of I-CAR. It is largely where the heritage and traditions of this organization are kept alive. It has been the eyes and ears of the organization, as well, over the years – providing insights and feedback on the needs of our customer, the auto collision inter-industry. Since last November, we have begun to supplement the feedback we get from the frontlines with other mechanisms: Industry Segment Advisory Councils, Market Segment Teams, industry relations activities, and others.” Edelen continued, “But, at the end of the day, it is our volunteers and program instructors who see first-hand how what we do creates a valuable training experience, or misses the mark. My commitment to this group is to continue to explore the most efficient and effective ways to capture the observations and the thoughts that you have, and to use them constructively. We must continue to enhance the I-CAR training and service experience at a market level. And, of course, we will continue to work with the International Advisory Committee as a channel for your feedback, as well.”

Improving the infrastructure for improved quality and efficiency – Over the course of the past twelve months, a number of changes within the I-CAR organization, in its business processes and in its approach to technology will provide improved capability to identify and to respond to the needs of the inter-industry.

FLAG FLOWN IN FALLUJAH OPENS EVENTS AT THE I-CAR INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING

Before I-CAR President and CEO John Edelen presented his message to attendees at the meeting, it all began with the presentation of the American flag flown over Fallujah, Iraq on behalf of I-CAR and the southern California Volunteer Committee. I-CAR Program Instructor and volunteer committee member Toby Chess spearheaded an effort to donate Christmas gifts to the United States Marine Corp and their families last fall. Chess was presented the flag recently as a thank you for his efforts and the efforts of the committee.

The ceremony began with the presentation of the American flag
The ceremony began with the presentation of the American flag followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

Edelen thanks Chess in the following note.

Toby:
I want to thank you, on behalf of I-CAR, for donating the American flag that was given to you and the Southern California committee members by the United States Marine Corps for your generosity to the Marine families of Fort Pendleton.

The activities of you and your industry colleagues, on behalf of the families of our Marines, are a testament to the kind of people that you are. This activity – and your I-CAR activities – are evidence of the generous spirit that you share, and your commitment to the different communities that you touch through a broad range of activities.

In a way, this spirit typifies the spirit of the I-CAR volunteers, who work to “give something back” to the inter-industry from which we derive our success.

Again, Toby, I thank you for donating this flag to I-CAR. It will fly proudly in the lobby of our I-CAR Training Support Center in Illinois.

Gratefully,

John Edelen

INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (IAC) SEES RESULTS FROM STAFF

The International Advisory Committee plays a very important role within the inter-industry. Often information and feedback filter up from the frontlines (volunteers and program instructors) to the members of the committee. Out of the feedback provided, short term and long term recommendations are made to staff for improvements within I-CAR and its business practices. During the IAC meeting staff liaisons Joyce Kasmer, I-CAR Director of Marketing and Jeff Peevy, I-CAR Director of North American Operations, provided the group a comprehensive report of the action items achieved. Some of these highlights include: Frontline Live meetings, the Insider e-newsletter, a marketing resource tool CD for volunteers, and more. Kasmer and Peevy reviewed this work with all volunteers and program instructors during the Frontline Live meetings on August 7.

INDUSTRY SEGMENT ADVISORY COUNCILS MOVE WORK FORWARD

All three current industry segment advisory councils also met during the Annual Meeting, the feedback provided by this group of volunteers is key to the success of I-CAR moving forward. The following is a brief highlight of what each group covered.

Collision Repair Facility and Insurance ISACs – Both groups worked on identifying the business needs of their respective participant organizations in an effort to provide relevant information and supply I-CAR with insights that will further the development of tools that can be utilized by shop owners and training managers for providing greater visibility into their training initiatives. I-CAR will be able to deliver reports from information gathered at these meetings that can be utilized to identify training needs at various organizational levels.

OEM ISAC – The bulk of the discussion surrounded vehicle technology and getting I-CAR geared up for continued advancements in advanced high strength steels and alternative fuels. Also discussed some of the different methods the vehicle makers will be using to identify high and ultra high strength steels in their repair information.

Thank you to all of the following for their time and participation at the Annual Meeting.

Collision Repair Facility ISAC Meeting attendees: Barry Dorn, Dorn’s Body & Paint; Paul Blaski, Sterling Autobody Centers; Rose Grenell, ABRA; Aaron Clark, Collision Solutions; Joyce Kasmer, I-CAR (Staff Liaison); Jeff Peevy, I-CAR (Staff Liaison); and Karl Kirschenman, I-CAR.

Insurance ISAC Meeting attendees: Mike DeVoss, State Farm (Chair); Danielle Banaszek, Farmers; Mark Naron, Allstate; Gerald Poirier, AIG; Cam Sells, I-CAR (Staff Liaison); and Dave Coffey, I-CAR (Staff Liaison).

GOLD CLASS PROFESSIONALS & PLATINUM INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION COUNCIL REVIEW ROI SURVEY RESULTS

The group spent the bulk of the meeting reviewing survey results from the recently conducted ROI surveys. The surveys released in July looked to indicate the ‘Return on Investment’ for those who train with I-CAR, taking it a step further with those who hold the Gold Class Professionals and Platinum Individual designations and their ROI for pursuing and maintaining the designations. The findings were fascinating and sparked great conversation and ideas in the meeting. The group discussed how the information can be further dissected and utilized in the future.

Thank you to all of the following for their time and participation at the Annual Meeting.

In attendance: Garth Shaw, Murray Chevrolet; Aaron Clark, Collision Solutions; Ray Fisher, ASA of Michigan; Wildy Kerby, State Farm Insurance; Dusty Womble, Roger Beasley Collision Center; Donna Miller, Allstate Insurance; Gus Papavasilakis, Dale-Way Auto Body Center; Steve Saunders, Faith Quality Body Shop; Jeff Peevy, I-CAR (Staff Liaison); and Jolinda Ottum, I-CAR (Staff Liaison).

FEEDBACK SESSIONS FOCUS ON CURRICULUM AND DELIVERY

Focusing on the core of what I-CAR truly is as a training organization for the auto collision industry the feedback sessions focused heavily on curriculum and delivery. The feedback session took place Thursday, July 24, 2008 and was facilitated by Lou DiLisio, Automotive Industry Consulting, Inc.; Michael Condon, Condon Consulting LLC; and Rick Sherwood, OEM Collision Repair Resources, LLC.

The feedback session which was originally billed as segment oriented session worked as an industry-wide platform to voice concerns and observations. It gave I-CAR staff an opportunity to listen and take it all in.

Gary Wano addressed his concerns
Newly elected Chairman of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists Gary Wano addressed his concerns before attendees.

feedback session
The feedback session was the most well attended event during the Annual Meeting with nearly 200 attendees, the session was open to everyone, not just those attending the Annual Meeting.

Aaron Schulenburg addressed the audience
Washington Metropolitan Autobody Association (WMABA) Treasurer Aaron Schulenburg addressed the audience.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR AND VOLUNTEER SESSIONS PROVE TO ENGAGE

The I-CAR Program Instructor sessions were broken out into three areas of needed information. The first session covered best practices of the program instructor. Several program instructors have commented that there are no cut and dry instructions to assist them on items such as ordering material; expenses and time sheets; dress code; and paperwork processing. The second session covered new programs, keeping up with changes in the industry, and curriculum offerings. The third session explored marketing tools and information to assist the program instructor in making their programs and I-CAR classroom experience a success.

In the Volunteer sessions topics revolved heavily around class scheduling and marketing and many great ideas were shared among those in attendance. Some of those ideas relate to ways to proactively know what classes to schedule in certain markets, creating a regular and basic class structure for each market, use data for smart scheduling, hosting regular committee meetings, reaching out to Gold Class Professionals businesses regularly, insurers and jobbers to hand out flyers and talk up upcoming training, hosting I-CAR awareness events to re-introduce I-CAR in a market area, and more.

Also, the Western Zone will be testing the effectiveness of an assessment test that can be distributed to collision repair facilities first to determine the areas of continuing education need in I-CAR training. They will also be encouraged to use the tests in their hiring practices. This will be piloted in only two Western Zone markets starting out.

TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS KEEP ATTENDEES COMING BACK

Ever popular with Annual Meeting attendees, technical presentations represent an aspect of the meeting that has remained throughout the years. This year’s presentations were provided by representatives from General Motors, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Toyota. Presentations covered the latest repair recommendations from each OEM, some were vehicle specific, others covered their hybrid models only, in addition some presentations focused on advanced high strength steels. All information was packaged in a way so that information could be useful in the everyday work environment of a collision repair technician, estimator, appraiser, or instructor.

New to this year’s meeting, a presentation by the American Iron & Steel Institute, the presentation brought attendees up-to-date on emerging steel trends and the latest information on OEM steel applications of today and for tomorrow.

Also, I-CAR in conjunction with RadTech put on an off-sight presentation Thursday, July 24. A special thanks to Tom Lantz and Bill Ledbetter for securing a location for this event at Ford of North Scottsdale Collision Center. The presentation centered around Ultraviolet Curing Technologies; product safety; the proper use of UV-Cure lamps, UV-Cure Glazing fillers, UV-Primer Surfacers, and UV-Cure Clearcoats; and how UV-Cure products help the environment.

A discussion panel on waterborne paint moderated by Jeff Peevy, I-CAR Director of Field Operations, North America was another highlight of the meeting. Representatives from several major paint companies participated and fielded questions from attendees. Many of the questions revolved around the proper use of waterborne paint, its drying capabilities, how to properly clean up and store waterborne paint, and its cost compared to solvent paint.

Panelists stressed attendees to “go cold turkey” and make a 100% switch from solvent to waterborne paint throughout an entire collision repair facility. Although the right materials, equipment, process, and more needs to be in place first to successfully make the switch. The price of waterborne paint is higher but the amount needed is less than solvent making the cost neutral to flat. Color theory and mixing processes are still the same with waterborne paint, in the color matching process you have to wait until after you spray to get the true color and it is necessary to let it hydrate, pick-up time to coat, and verify color before applying it to a vehicle. Also stressed that solvent and waterborne paints need to be recycled separately and stressed that it is important not to use the same paint guns for both waterborne and solvent paints.

Waterborne paint is a hot topic as collision repair facilities transition to new products. California legislation requires that every shop be water-based as of last month.

Thank you to the representatives from the following companies that participated in the panel discussion: AFC Finishing Systems, Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc., BASF Corporation, DeVilbiss Automotive Refinishing, DuPont Refinish, PPG Industries, SATA Spray Equipment, Sherwin-Williams, Spies Hecker, and Standox.

I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION RECOGNIZES TOP VOLUNTEERS IN FIRST TIME AWARDS

In the spring, the I-CAR Education Foundation awarded over $100,000 in student scholarships, instructor training grants, and curriculum grants.  This was an achievement that took industry support through fundraisers, donations, and volunteered time. Because of the tremendous amount of effort put in by I-CAR volunteers, the I-CAR Education Foundation created special awards to recognize the efforts of those volunteers. The awards were presented at the I-CAR Annual Meeting and will be housed at the I-CAR Training Support Center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

“On behalf of the Education Foundation staff, I want to congratulate the winners of the Zone of the Year and Committee of the Year Awards,” said Melissa Marscin, I-CAR Education Foundation Development Administrator. “These award recipients have truly embraced what the Education Foundation is doing to help career and technical schools and colleges across North America.”

Zone of the Year Award
The I-CAR Education Foundation created an award for Zone of the Year. There were several criteria that went into the selection of the Zone of the Year. The Education Foundation chose a Zone which embraced the new mission of the Education Foundation. Its members raised a great deal of money for the campaign and also helped to spread the word about what the Education Foundation is trying to accomplish.
