I-CAR’S WELDING QUALIFICATION SERIES: AN “EXPERIENCE” COURSE

Welding Qualification Series

In October, I-CAR introduced its re-engineered welding courses to the industry as a comprehensive training series. The I-CAR Welding Qualification Series is available as one of three hands-on courses that are each completed with the industry recognized Welding Qualification Test.

After evaluating differences between its testing program that was taking place at physical locations and the more comprehensive system that was offered through its now-retired mobile program, I-CAR learned that the success rate for students who had the opportunity to receive instruction and practice welds prior to taking the test was significantly higher than that of students who were tested without any preparation.

With the understanding that the training and practice was an important part of ensuring proper welds on the test, the missing element in creating as realistic an environment possible was the environment itself.

Jeff Peevy, I-CAR Field Operations Director, and his team went to work to bring the comprehensive training into the shop with a complete experience that combined instructor-led training, hands-on practice, and the qualification test with an evaluation of the shop’s equipment. The result was a welding qualification that ensured that the welds taking place in the shop met the standards of those on the test.

The Welding Qualification Series is available anywhere in the United States for steel, aluminum, and structural parts steel. The Steel Welding Qualification Series gives the technician the ability to practice and test by completing several welds normally used when repairing vehicles with steel parts. The Aluminum Welding Qualification Series offers hands on practice and testing only on aluminum. The Structural Parts Steel Qualification Series offers a “real world experience” combining both sectioning and welding. The Welding Qualification Series can be taught as a full course or arranged for those whose qualifications are due to expire and need to re-qualify.

Shops can request any of the Welding Series’ by visiting the I-CAR website at
www.i-car.com and completing the “request a welding course” form or by contacting the Field Support Services Team at 800-422-7456.

I-CAR INTRODUCES CONCEPT FOR ROLE-BASED TRAINING CURRICULUM

I-CAR has outlined a realignment of its curriculum that defines a framework for industry training based upon an individual’s role and level of experience and responsibility.

For two years I-CAR has worked with industry professionals to fully understand training needs for all segments of the industry. The Professional Development Matrix is designed to provide collision repairers, insurers, and others with training paths valuable to their role in the industry.

The Professional Development Matrix was introduced to the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) during NACE in Las Vegas, the first week of November.

I-CAR TO HOST UPCOMING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

As I-CAR continues to gather feedback from the inter-industry on how best to re-engineer its course offerings to meet today’s needs, it is opening the doors for a “round table” discussion that will take place on Wednesday, December 9 at its Training Support Center in Hoffman Estates, IL. All interested members of the collision repair inter-industry are encouraged to participate in an open dialog about the ongoing work to organize industry training around role-specific career paths.

Those interested in participating must register by Friday, December 4 at
www.i-car.com/roundtable. The meeting will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be served. Participant travel is at the participant’s expense.

I-CAR RECOGNIZES LEADERS IN THEIR ROLES TO BRING NEW TRAINING TO THE COLLISION REPAIR INTER-INDUSTRY

I-CAR recognized the commitment of two industry leaders as they concluded serving as chairmen of the training organization’s Industry Segment Advisory Councils (ISACs) at meetings held earlier this month in Las Vegas during the NACE Expo. Paul Blaski, Training Director with Sterling Autobody Centers served as chairman of the Collision Repair Facility ISAC and Mike DeVoss, Estimatic Section Manager with State Farm Insurance served as chairman of the Insurance ISAC.

Both were recognized for their contributions in serving as the first chairmen of the committees, which were created two years ago as a means of gathering regular feedback from professionals within the collision repair inter-industry.

Aaron Clark, President of Collision Solutions, will succeed Blaski as chair of the Collision Repair Facility ISAC and Scott Kohl, Vice President and Manager for Safeco Insurance, will serve as chairman of the Insurance ISAC.
