Current Events/News: I-CAR Press Releases: 1997 Press Releases
August 29, 1997 I-CAR INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING (Rolling Meadows) The I-CAR International Annual Meeting took place July 9 - 13, 1997 in Pittsburgh and was attended by more than 460 people. The event kicked off with Instructor Day. Many great speakers presented to this large group. Ed Staquet, Lord Corporation spoke on Adhesives; Paul Maiersperger, DuPont Automotive Refinishes, spoke on Measuring Refinish Appearance; Charlie L. Wood, Jr., Consultant, spoke on Teaching Aluminum Repair; Jimmie Harris, Garmet USA, spoke on Spraybooths; and Bill Acheson, a professor from the University of Pittsburgh, spoke on Effective Presentation Tactics. The Gold Class Steering Committee Meeting and the I-CAR Understanding Collision Repair Course were also held on Thursday. There were many valuable workshops to choose from on Friday. The Gold Class workshop and the Estimating Systems workshops both were successful and drew large crowds. New to the Annual Meeting this year was a workshop to discuss International office service improvements and course paperwork requirements. This workshop was very beneficial, and you can expect to see more of these kinds of workshops at future meetings. The afternoon General Session allowed I-CAR's Outgoing Chair, Bill Wicklund of Wicklund's CARSTAR, to say good-bye; Tom Mack to update attendees on the status of I-CAR; and Tom McGee to update the audience on UPCR. Scott Biggs was present to discuss Collision Repair in the 21st Century, and a panel was present to discuss electric vehicles. The panel included: Joe Landolfi, Kemper Insurance; Robert Larson, Saturn; Tony Warren, Alcan Aluminum; and Paul Martin, Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. The Recognition Luncheon and the Awards Banquet gave all attendees the opportunity to recognize the award winners. It also allowed them to see the companies and people who are actively participating behind the scenes with the development of I-CAR courses, end-of-course exams and UPCR. Congratulations to all award winners! Saturday's agenda included an Effective Presentation Tactics workshop, an Estimating Systems Workshop, and Meeting Your Needs workshop which was hosted by the Education Foundation. A luncheon on Saturday, hosted by the Education Foundation, gave attendees the opportunity to see and hear about the members of Team USA, Joe Raschke and John MacDowell. When introduced, they received a standing ovation in recognition of their excellent showing in the international competition in Switzerland. The afternoon General Session was kicked off by I-CAR's Incoming Chairman, Larry Laumann of Mitchell International. After Larry completed his Incoming Address, Bill Wicklund, Outgoing Chair, passed him the I-CAR gavel. The remainder of the afternoon held a discussion on Electronics by Branko Beronja, Snap-On Inc., and a discussion on The Internet and Collision Repair by Steve Finley, KRO Productions; Bob Richards, Autobody Online; and Erick Bickett, Auto Center Autobody, Inc. The General Session was concluded by an inspiring Keynote speaker, Dr. Lowell Catlett, New Mexico State University. Dr. Catlett spoke on reaching for the next trend and seeing the future as an opportunity. His humorous, statistically driven and energetic presentation was a positive note to end on. The Annual Meeting was wrapped up on Saturday evening with Regional and Canadian Receptions. Thanks to all the Regional and National Managers for planning a great evening. I-CAR looks forward to seeing everyone next year at the Hilton at Walt Disney World Village in Lake Buena Vista, FL, July 29 - August 2, 1998! I-CAR, founded in 1979, is an international, not-for-profit, training organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of auto collision repair for the ultimate benefit of consumers.
