September 30, 1998 I-CAR CANADA ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN THE GOLD CLASS PROFESSIONALS AND PLATINUM INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS FOR 1998-99 (Scarborough, ON) Several changes have been made to the Gold Class Professionals and Platinum Individual programs for 1998-99. On January 1, 1998, I-CAR Canada introduced the new Sunsetting Policy to meet the demands of the Collision Industry. This policy affected courses that have been updated three times or more, or are more than 10 years old. Students who have taken these courses are in need of updated training. The following courses were sunsetted as of January 1, 1998: 9-Part Unibody - 010 Course introduced in 19812-Part Plastic Repair - 040 Course introduced in 19842-Part Color Matching - 020 Course introduced in 1987 POLICY: All new applicants to the 1998 Gold Class Professionals and Platinum Individual programs will have to meet these requirements to qualify for either the Gold Class Professionals or Platinum Individual program. All renewing applicants for Gold Class will have a one-year grace period to update their training. Platinum Individual applicants will have to be upgraded by the time they reapply two years from their approval date. Therefore, effective January 1, 1999, all new and renewing businesses and new Platinum Individual applicants will no longer be able to apply these courses towards the Gold Class Professionals or Platinum Individual programs. NEW: Another sunsetting requirement was added at the Gold Class Steering Committee Meeting held during the I-CAR International Annual Meeting in Lake Buena Vista, FL, on July 31, 1998. This stipulates that I-CAR will only sunset courses where the content has changed by 40% or more. PLEASE NOTE The original 1998 Program Changes also included the sun setting of the following two courses for 1999: 8-Part New Unibody - 050 Course introduced in 19872-Part Finish Matching - 070 Course introduced in 1988 The contents of both these courses have not met all of the sunsetting requirements. Therefore, they will NOT BE sunsetted in 1999 until further upgrades have been made. Effective January 1, 1999, the following course is scheduled to be sunsetted, and Students who have taken this course will not be allowed to apply it towards Gold Class or Platinum: CART Aluminum - 150 Course introduced in 1993 All new applicants to the Gold Class Professionals and Platinum Individual programs will have to meet these requirements to qualify for Gold Class or Platinum. All renewing applicants for Gold Class will have a one-year grace period to update their training. Platinum Individual applicants will have to be upgraded by the time they reapply two years from their approval date. Therefore, on January 1, 2000, all new and renewing businesses and new Platinum Individual applicants cannot apply the CART Aluminum Course towards Gold Class. Also effective in Canada on January 1, 1999, helper and apprentice positions will be required to have I-CAR Training. This decision was made because helpers and apprentices are directly involved in the collision repair process and should be required to have training. Helper and apprentice positions will need to obtain 50% of the points required for the position they are assisting. The points required for helper and apprentice positions will be as follows: Within a collision repair business: A combination technician helper will be required to obtain seven Gold Class pointsA collision repair technician helper six pointsAn alignment and mechanical repair technician helper six pointsA refinish technician helper three points Within a glass business, an installer helper will be required to obtain one Gold Class point. Within a recycler business, a dismantler helper will be required to obtain four points. Helper and apprentice positions for all new applicants to the program will be required to meet these point requirements for the business to qualify for Gold Class. Helper and apprentice positions for all renewing applicants will have a one-year grace period to obtain the necessary I-CAR Training. Therefore, on January 1, 2000, helper and apprentice positions for all new and renewing applicants will be required to have the necessary I-CAR Training to qualify for Gold Class. 1999 Minimum Point Requirements - In Canada Gold Class: All directly involved employees must reach a minimum of 60% of their required points in addition to the 80% total requirement by the business. Platinum: To qualify for the Platinum Individual Program, an individual must achieve 100% of the points, or course units, allocated to their position or job description.
