I-CAR ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ENHANCED DELIVERY OF TRAINING

(Lake Buena Vista, FL) I-CAR announced plans for a new Enhanced Delivery System for I-CAR Training. The announcement was made at the I-CAR International Annual Meeting held in Lake Buena Vista, FL, in July. A series of modularized training programs will be developed, which will utilize enhanced delivery methods and communication technologies.

The anticipated result of the enhanced delivery system will be a new system of I-CAR Training which will still be dependent on I-CAR's greatest strength - its dedicated Volunteers and Instructors - but which provides the opportunity to recognize other available Industry training and eliminate the weaknesses that have been unsolvable by the current methods of I-CAR Training.

"The change in the I-CAR programs will allow for continuous training with less redundancy and create an ongoing training path for technicians and appraisers," said Tom McGee, I-CAR Technical Director.

The primary delivery method of I-CAR Training will remain traditional classroom presentation. However, current methods of I-CAR classroom training support only black and white overheads. The new modularized programs will be packaged on CD-ROM and will greatly advance the information and interest level of I-CAR Training. This will be done through improved presentation techniques, classroom props, and interactive Student exercises.

The current course content will be expanded into multiple programs and focus only on a specific content area. The approximately 65 programs that are currently planned for development will be knowledge and skills-based, as well as provide opportunities for technicians to verify their skills. Prep courses and qualification tests will be added and will allow technicians to practice and demonstrate what has been learned in certain content areas.

These programs will be developed over a three year period using the UPCR, ADVANCE-TECH, and NATEF task lists as a guide for content. In addition, they will be developed with the help of representatives from all Industry segments. The order in which these programs will be developed are dependent on the training needs that have been identified by I-CAR and I-CAR Education Foundation customers, and which current content areas are in need of updating.

One of the benefits resulting from this new strategy will be the ability to address the equivalency training issue within the Industry. By organizing course content into specific areas, a comparison of other training can be done more easily. Refinishing technicians, for example, may not be required to take an introduction to refinishing offered by a paint supplier if the supplier agrees that I-CAR's Refinishing Program 1 covers the same material, and vice versa. Gold Class recognition may also be available for completion of ASE and/or NGA Certification tests and specific training programs offered by vehicle makers and product and equipment suppliers.

The modularized training programs will also eliminate redundant training and offer more flexibility in the training programs that are offered. When new technology is introduced on future vehicles, programs will be added to provide training on that technology. This will enable customers to receive training on the new information only, and not retake an existing program just to obtain the new information. Because of the amount of new material being planned, these programs will also better prepare Students for ASE and NGA Certifications.

The complete development cycle will take approximately three years, with several of the programs becoming available as early as Summer 1999.

I-CAR, founded in 1979, is an international, not-for-profit, training organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of auto collision repair for the ultimate benefit of consumers.
