Current Events/News: I-CAR Press Releases February 2, 2004 FIRST I-CAR® STRUCTURAL PARTS STEEL QUALIFICATION TEST SITE OPENS IN OKLAHOMA CITY ROLLING MEADOWS, IL - February 2, 2004 - The first I-CAR Structural Parts Steel (SPS) Qualification Test site opened Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the Francis Tuttle Technology Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The hands-on skills based I-CAR SPS Qualification Test allows technicians to demonstrate their skills in GMA (MIG) Welding when sectioning structural steel parts. The steel used for the qualification test is the same type and thickness used for the I‑CAR Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Qualification Test (WQT). The participants are required to complete two sectioning joints on a simulated structural part. The two joints include a butt joint with backing and an offset fillet weld. Plug welds are also used with the sectioning joints. Thirty welds are made in flat, vertical, and overhead positions. To pass the qualification test, the overall length of the structural part must be within specification and the welds must pass visual inspection. The Francis Tuttle Technology Center is also an I‑CAR Automotive Steel and Aluminum Welding Qualification Test site. The initial SPS qualification test was attended by five industry professionals and was administered by I-CAR Qualification Test Program Manager Audie Swedeen. Visit I-CAR online at www.i-car.com for updates on openings of additional SPS qualification test sites or contact Audie Swedeen at 877.422.7644 for more information.
