Current Events/News: I-CAR Press Releases August 30, 2004 EMERGENCY AND EXTRICATION SAFETY TRAINING FOR EMERGENCY PERSONNEL AND FIRST RESPONDERS PROVIDED AT NO CHARGEROLLING MEADOWS, IL - August 30, 2004 - Over 200 emergency personnel and first responders attended an Emergency and Extrication Safety Training program, held in Chicago on Saturday, August 7, 2004. Principal sponsors of the event included local Gold Class Professionals collision repair businesses, collision repair career and technical schools and colleges, and Allstate Insurance Company. Information provided will help to save the lives of those who save others by detailing proper safety and handling of vehicles at the scene of a collision, focusing primarily on working around airbags and hybrid vehicles. The main topics covered included: emergency services and first responder safety; restraint system overview, operation, and safety and handling procedures; and hybrid and alternative fuel safety and handling procedures. A live exercise demonstrating the “Phases of Rescue” was also conducted and narrated by Southern Region Instructor Todd Hoffman. “This training will definitely help out in the long run,” said Daniel Gentry, a firefighter for the Antioch Fire Department in Antioch, Illinois who attended the training session. “It was obvious that a lot of thought and effort went into preparing the presentation it covered all aspects of safety devices in cars and also dispelled many myths. One of the greatest benefits of the training was how it took into account the safety of all firefighters.” “These training sessions are being conducted across North America and offer an excellent opportunity to provide life-saving information to emergency personnel,” said Hoffman. “The information given to these professionals is invaluable it’s a great service, especially when offered at no charge.” Attendees were so appreciative of his time and efforts that Hoffman received a standing ovation at the program’s conclusion. “Collision repair industry professionals are making a difference in their communities,” explained Rick Tuuri, Gold Class Professionals Spokesperson and Director of Business Development for I-CAR. “Gold Class Professionals and collision repair career and technical schools and colleges are demonstrating their commitment to overall public safety by sponsoring these programs. This commitment expands well beyond providing complete and safe repairs.” “Many of the safety features that consumers expect in today’s vehicles may actually pose a safety risk to rescuers in the event of a collision,” stated Ron Ray, Executive Director of the I-CAR Education Foundation. “Learning how to maneuver safely around these technologies not only protects the lives of emergency personnel, but also those that are being rescuing. Events such as this illustrate just one of the many ways that the collision industry provides a valuable service to local communities.” Details on future Emergency and Extrication Safety Training events are available at www.goldclass.com.
