ADVANTAGE ONLINE: ONE-TOUCH UP AUTOMATIC WINDOW September 24, 2001 -There are many new features being incorporated into todays vehicles that may be challenging for technicians to diagnose and repair, especially if the repair information is not easily accessible. One of these new features is the "One-Touch Up" automatic driver and passenger power windows, which comes as standard equipment on the 2001 Cadillac Seville and the 2002 Cadillac DeVille. One-Touch Up, developed by Brose North America, uses an indirect detection system that automatically monitors the windows speed and direction. When an object enters the path of the automatically closing window, a force of less than 100 N (22.5 lb.) causes the window to reverse direction. Brose North Americas algorithm recognition standards are programmed into an electronic unit, which is fully integrated into the window regulator motor. The algorithm is engineered to adjust to variable voltages, temperatures, and window seal wear. Safety features include a hardened circuitry to protect against abrupt voltage drops or changes in dynamic voltage and smart thermal overload protection to reduce motor overheating. In addition, the window regulator has safeguards to aid in preventing an error in window reversal under uneven road conditions. For those who prefer to not use the One-Touch Up feature, continuously holding the switch when closing the window will automatically deactivate the One-Touch Up window regulator and the obstacle detection function. When involved in a collision, especially a side-impact, the One-Touch Up window regulator may have sustained damage. How to inspect and repair the One-Touch Up automatic window will be discussed in the next issue of the I-CAR Advantage Online. Look for it to appear in the next transmission of the I-CAR e-newsletters. |
