ADVANTAGE ONLINE: ONE-TOUCH UP AUTOMATIC WINDOW – INSPECTION AND REPAIR

October 8, 2001 -In the last issue of the I-CAR e-newsletters, the operation of the One-Touch Up automatic power windows, featured on the 2001 Cadillac Seville and the 2002 Cadillac DeVille, was explained. How to inspect and repair the inoperative Express Up function will be explained in this issue. Express Up is the name of the function for the One-Touch Up automatic window system.

In order to inspect and repair the inoperative Express Up function, the vehicle-specific service manual will need to be referenced. First, make sure to perform the door systems diagnostic system check and verify that the Express Up function of the appropriate power window is not operating properly. If the Express Up function is operating as described in the Description and Operation section of the service manual, other areas will need to be checked first. Refer to Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems located in the service manual before continuing. If the Express Up function is not operating as described, a scan tool is required to diagnose the inoperative Express Up function.

First, determine which window is inoperative by using the scan tool to check the parameters of the driver and passenger door window switch. Move the appropriate window switch to the up position. If the parameter did not change from the idle state to the Express Up state for either the driver or passenger side window, inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the driver door switch assembly or passenger door window switch. If, after inspection, the Express Up function is still inoperative, the driver door switch assembly or passenger front door switch will require replacement. After replacement, reprogram the window sensor/motor (see below). Finally, operate the system to verify that all repairs have been made properly.

If the parameter changed from the idle state to the Express Up state for both the driver and passenger side window, disconnect the harness connector of the appropriate window sensor/motor assembly, and measure the voltage from the high-speed communications circuit of the harness connector to a ground. If the voltage measures within the specified range of 7.0–9.25 volts, inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate window sensor/motor assembly. If the voltage does not measure within the specified range, test for a short to ground, an open, or high resistance at the high-speed communications circuit of the of the appropriate window sensor. If the condition is not found, test for a short to battery positive voltage at the high-speed communications circuit of the appropriate window sensor. If the condition is still not found, test for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate door module. If a problem still exists, replace the inoperative door module. It is important to test the battery positive voltage circuit of the appropriate window sensor for a short to ground before replacing the door module. After replacement, reprogram the window sensor/motor (see below). Finally, operate the system to verify that all repairs have been made properly.

Programming the Window Sensor/Motor – Express Up Function

After all repairs have been made, the driver and passenger side door window regulator motor needs to be reprogrammed in order for the Express Up feature to function properly. To program the motor, press and hold the power window switch until the window is in its fully down position, and continue to hold the switch in this position for three seconds. Then, press and hold the power window switch until the window is in its fully up position, and continue to hold the switch in this position for three seconds. The power window regulator motor is now programmed for the Express Up function. Repeat this process for each power window.

Take caution: before diagnosing and/or repairing parts in or near the driver or passenger door, be sure to disconnect the appropriate power window switch. If the Express Up function is not operating properly, the window may continue to move upward very quickly without stopping, which could result in serious injury.

Conclusion

The diagnostic and repair procedure explained above was referenced from the 2002 Cadillac DeVille Service Manual. This particular procedure is intended to provide general diagnostic and repair information, including any tools or manuals that may be required to perform the operations as well as information on part repairability or replacement. Repair technicians may find it helpful to reference this service manual for any additional and/or specific diagnostic and repair procedures.
