ADVANTAGE ONLINE: PERSONAL SAFETY SYSTEM – PARTS INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

October 5, 2001 -A description of the Personal Safety System was provided in the last issue of the I-CAR e-newsletters. This issue provides part inspection and replacement requirements for the Personal Safety System on the 2000 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.

In addition to the 2000 and 2001 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, the 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, Focus, Taurus, and Windstar; the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis and Sable; the 2002 Lincoln Town Car; and the 2002 Jaguar XK8 are equipped with the Personal Safety System as well. Furthermore, this system will be offered on the 2002 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer as an interim model year change.

Parts of the Personal Safety System that must be replaced following a deployment and parts that must be inspected and replaced if damaged are listed below for the 2000 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. The inspection and replacement requirements specific to the 2000 Taurus/Sable may vary for each vehicle that features the Personal Safety System. It is important to refer to an authorized Ford Motor Company service manual for the particular vehicle system service requirements and procedures for inspecting and/or replacing components of the Personal Safety System and any other particular safety features.

2000 FORD TAURUS AND MERCURY SABLE

Parts That Must Be Replaced Following a Deployment:

  • Restraint Control Module
  • Airbag Modules
  • Airbag Sliding Contact
  • Electronic Crash Severity Sensor
  • Driver’s Seat Track Position Sensor
  • Seat Belt System Pretensioners
  • Seat Belt Pretensioner / Buckle Switch Assembly
  • Any Damaged or Defective Restraint System Part

Parts That Must Be Inspected and Replaced If Damaged:

  • Steering Wheel and Column
  • Restraints Control Module Mounting Bracket
  • Electronic Crash Severity Sensor Mounting Bracket
  • Wiring Harness and Connectors
  • Any Restraint System Part or Wiring Identified By a Diagnostic Check

Disable Procedure And Time:

  • Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  • Wait at least one minute.
