MANDATORY REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENT FOR BMW STEERING GEAR

April 8, 2002 -A service information bulletin released by BMW in July 2001 (S.I. 32 02 01) requires replacement of the vehicle’s steering gear assembly if there's major steering or suspension system damage due to a collision. The bulletin applies to BMW vehicles for all model years.

The bulletin states that "it may be extremely difficult to diagnose internal damage to steering boxes or racks," and "a thorough internal check of steering gears is generally not economically feasible."

The BMW bulletin states that the steering gear assembly must be replaced if there's visible damage to the steering gear itself, including evidence of fire damage. The steering gear assembly must also be replaced if there's any permanent damage or cracks on:

  • steering gear mounts.
  • the front axle subframe.
  • steering drop arms or Pitman arms.
  • struts.
  • spindles or hubs.
  • the steering column.
  • control arms or wishbones.
  • thrust or tension rods or stabilizers performing a locating function.
  • track rods or drag links and tie rods.

The steering gear assembly does NOT have to be replaced if damage was caused from improper towing or tie-downs. One indication that the steering gear is functioning normally is if there's no binding or increased turning effort when operating the steering gear from lock to lock with the key in the RUN position and the engine off.

Another indicator of proper operation is if the collision has not caused the wheel alignment to become nonadjustable within specified tolerances using the normal adjustment procedures.
