January 5, 2004 -Toyota Motor Company has released a bulletin regarding individual structural replacement parts on their perimeter frame vehicles. Parts that are attached to the frame that may become damaged during a collision can be replaced individually when a service part is available from Toyota.

Note: Sectioning of structural members on perimeter frame vehicles is not a Toyota or Lexus approved repair procedure.

Serviceable Parts And Applicable Models

Toyota Motor Company’s bulletin states that serviceable parts include body or cab mounts (see Figures 1 and 2), frame crossmembers, mounting flanges, and suspension mounts. Current models that feature a body over perimeter frame design include the Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, Lexus GX 470, and Lexus LX 470 (all model years).

Replacement Procedures And Precautions

Toyota Motor Company’s structural bulletin states that factory-riveted parts may be attached using SAE Grade 8 heat-treated shouldered bolts with a minimum tensile strength rating of 150,000 psi, washers, and self-locking nuts. Recommended torque specifications are 73–97 lb-ft. The bulletin suggests that technicians refer to the I-CAR Uniform Procedures for Collision Repair (UPCR), procedure SP11S, 9.5 Riveted-On Part Replacement for more in-depth information on this replacement procedure.

If the part is welded to the frame, GMA (MIG) welding can be used to replace the part. When welding, caution should be taken to not overheat the steel since this can adversely affect strength characteristics.

Conclusion

If collision repair technicians are faced with damaged frame parts on these perimeter frame Toyota and Lexus vehicles, they should check OEM replacement parts availability and review replacement procedures and precautions. This will help the collision repair facility make the best repair possible for their customers.
