Introduction to Custom Painting

This course is an Annual Training option for the following roles:
Estimator
Refinish Technician
Auto Physical Damage Appraiser

  • Understand the history of custom painting
  • Explain some of the different types of additives and how they affect appearance
  • Identify different types of application tools

Module 1 – Custom Painting Overview
The first module provides and overview of custom painting. The student will learn the history of custom painting and gain a deeper understanding of refinish materials. Additional information is presented about the importance of personal safety, the application environment and other considerations.

Module 2 – Custom Finishes
The second module presents information on the various custom finish considerations, from additives, to flash, dry, and cure time. The module concludes with explaining some of the different custom finishes that are available from candy coatings to color-shifting to the use of intercoat clearcoats.

Module 3 – Application Tools
In this third and final module the student will learn about the various types of masking equipment and how each is used in custom painting. Students will also learn about stencils and templates. Additional information will be presented on the various types of application equipment available and explaining the differences between various styles of airbrushes. This final module will conclude with presenting the different types of pinstriping brushes.
