I-CAR® Welding Program for Select Service® Repairers

Beginning April 2017, I-CAR’s Welding Training & Certification™ is a requirement as a participant in the State Farm™ Select Service Program. State Farm has made this change so that more of the industry, and ultimately every technician, has the knowledge and skills to perform proper repairs.
 
All I-CAR Welding Training & Certification programs begin with the Welding Capability & Readiness Assessment of the facility’s gear, equipment and infrastructure (Phase 1). Each program includes in-shop instruction on welding theory (Phase 2), followed by a skills assessment, then intensive hands-on practice with coaching as appropriate (Phase 3). Students are then required to pass a formal welding certification test to I-CAR standards (Phase 4).
 
All repairers within the Select Service network are now required to complete and maintain all three welding courses:

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

By December 31, 2017

 
  • All repairers with 10 or fewer technicians, at least one technician at each shop (any role) is currently certified in I-CAR Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03) and Steel Sectioning (SPS05)
 
  • All repairers with 11 or more technicians, at least two technicians at each shop (any role) is currently certified in I-CAR Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03) and Steel Sectioning ​(SPS05)
By March 31, 2018
 
  • All repairers with 10 or fewer technicians, at least one technician at each shop (any role) is currently certified in I-CAR Aluminum GMA (MIG) Welding (WCA03), or Ford Aluminum GMA (MIG) Welding (WCA05).
 
  • All repairers with 11 or more technicians, at least two technicians at each shop (any role) is currently certified in I-CAR Aluminum GMA (MIG) Welding (WCA03), or Ford Aluminum GMA (MIG) Welding (WCA05).

ADDITIONAL I-CAR TRAINING INCENTIVE

In an effort to encourage all who weld to complete their welding training, if more than the minimum required number of technicians register, attend, and become certified in an I-CAR welding event, each of those certified technicians will receive complimentary access to I-CAR’s Vehicle Technology and Trends 2017 (VT017E01) online course upon certification.

Incentive examples/details:

 
  • Repairers with 10 or less techs are only required to have 1 technician certified in each course.  If 2 or more become certified in a course, they each will receive access to the complimentary course.
 
  • Repairers with 11 or more techs are only required to have 2 technicians certified in each course.  If 3 or more become certified in a course, they each will receive access to the complimentary course.
 
  • Allow up to 6 weeks from the event date for complimentary access.
 
  • No refunds for any who have already paid for and taken the complimentary course prior to this program.

Select Service repairers who register for the I-CAR Welding, Training & Certification program will receive discounted pricing and can continue to save more with each additional technician who is registered for welding training.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 
  • Certification in Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03) is a pre-requisite to taking Steel Sectioning ​(SPS05) course.
 
  • Certification in Steel Sectioning ​(SPS05) also renews Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03) certification for students who are currently certified in Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03).
 
  • Shops holding both Steel GMA (MIG) Welding (WCS03) and Steel Sectioning ​(SPS05) events may do both events in one day, but this is at the discretion and agreement of both the shop and the I-CAR instructor.
 
  • All other normal I-CAR Welding Training & Certification rules and policies apply.

Prepare your facility
Use the Facility Preparation Checklists to confirm that your shop has all the required gear, equipment and infrastructure.  Choose the  checklist for the course you are registering for:

Provide Evidence of Insurance
Provide evidence of insurance by sending a copy of your Certificate of insurance. If you are not familiar with a Certificate of Insurance, click here for example.

Register
Download the appropriate Registration Form. Complete it and send it to I-CAR with your payment and certificate of insurance.

Schedule your event
An I-CAR representative will call you to schedule your event and conduct a preliminary Capability & Readiness Assessment, including an in-depth discussion to help you prepare for your event.

Make final preparations
A few days before your event, your I-CAR Welding Instructor will call you to continue your Welding Capability & Readiness Assessment confirming your facility’s readiness.

Training day!
The day of your course will begin with your Instructor completing the onsite portion of your Welding Capability & Readiness Assessment. Participating technicians will receive welding instruction followed by intensive hands-on welding practice and coaching, culminating in the Welding certification test.
